Sewing Straight in the Curves

Curves can be scary on a road or at the sewing machine, but Brett Bara is taking the fear out the round by just sewing straight. In her book, Sewing a Straight Line, Bara offers up a couple dozen projects: skirts, belt, curtains, quilts, bags and -surprise- a round bowl.

I gave it a try and sure enough, with a few quick, straight, stitches, the six-inch square became round! Using her instructions, it went together quickly easier and is now sitting happily on my desk holding paperclips. Yay for quick projects!

Brett Bara is well known for her Sewing 101 column, focused on bringing new sewists and curious onlookers into the craft. Check out her video tutorial for the fabric bowl here, but she has more on her blog. You can find her book at many independent fabric shops or your local bookseller.
